Preparing for Bargaining:

Contact Info and MEMBER SURVEY

Updated June 2008

GENERAL MEETING: Please join your fellow members on Thursday, June 19th at 7:30 pm in the Trend at Traill College so we can share information, conversation and refreshments.

If you are a student academic worker at Trent University, I want to tell you that your union, CUPE Local 3908, is going to begin bargaining a new Collective Agreement on behalf of the student worker membership (unit 2) in the coming weeks.

Your CUPE Bargaining Committee has tallied the results of the survey sent out to members earlier this year and we have a clear mandate from which to proceed as we enter the negotiating process. The Committee completed a thorough review of every other Collective Agreement pertaining to student workers at universities across the Province. We have solid knowledge about how Trent University ranks as an employer of this significant sector of university workers.

In the spirit of education, democracy and accountability, I would ask that you please attend a General Meeting where we can explain the process of collective bargaining and the role you're expected to play in that; we'll also explain our role as the bargaining committee and provide an outline of our bargaining proposals and priorities.

Karen Sutherland, President, CUPE 3908

UPDATE: In April 2008 a survey was mailed to Unit 2 Members to collect feedback regarding the most pressing issues facing Academic Workers at Trent University. If you have not received this survey, please phone or email us and we'll send you one a.s.a.p. Your feedback is vital, the union is only as strong as its members! Thank you.

We have just recently received a list of Unit 2 members and the University department that their pay stubs are sent to. After a year of discussions about access to our membership information, this was the only detail we have been provided with.

Unfortunately, the language regarding this item in the Unit 2 Collective Agreement is weak. At most universities, the employer is required to provide the union with fully detailed contact information. We hope to address this in the next round of collective bargaining which will be taking place in 2008!

It is important for the union to have a direct means to contact its membership, independently of the employer - especially as we face upcoming contract negotiations. Please help us complete a membership database by forwarding your contact information to our office.

These details will also be useful as we get organized for re-negotiating our Collective Agreement - what we call "bargaining" in the union world. And not to worry, your information will be kept confidential and will not result in an inundation of communication from your union local!

What it will mean is that we can keep you well informed about issues related to union business and your employment at Trent.
